Christmas in July

A growing tradition is Christmas in July

Christmas in July is a wonderful tradition that is growing in popularity.

Laura Legend wonders about Christmas in July…

In America, many families have started having celebrations for Christmas in July. There is a lot of speculation about Christmas in July, so one must wonder whether or not such debates have any merit.

Some say Christmas in July was dreamed up by retail merchants that wanted to benefit from another holiday season to emerge in their slow season. That makes a lot of sense as may “holidays” are emerging these days ranging from Bosses’ Day to Grandparent’s Day. Many people embrace these special days as they emerge which certainly benefits retail merchants as well as greeting card companies.

Some people are opposed to having Christmas in July since Christmas is a celebration of Christ’s birth which has traditionally been held on December 25th. However, most people accept that nobody really knows the precise date of Christ’s birth, so as long as the holiday doesn’t lose its meaning Christmas in July shouldn’t be a huge issue.

Some families love the concept of Christmas in July, especially if family members are scattered across the states, because it makes more sense for them to get together in July for summer vacations when the weather is better and travel isn’t so complicated.

Even so, the summer months just don’t seem like “Christmas” to many people because a lot of the fun of the Christmas season has to do with the weather. Hot spiced wassail and a huge turkey dinner just aren’t as appealing in July for some reason. Could you imagine chestnuts roasting on an open fire in the middle of July?

Shopping tip: Whether or not you celebrate Christmas in July, it may be a good idea to shop Christmas in July sales to get a jump start on your Christmas shopping saving money and spreading the expense of Christmas gift giving out so it doesn’t all hit in the holiday season.

While Christmas in July is picking up in the United States, it is most likely that the holiday originated in Australia where it has been popular for some time. In some areas in Australia, July is a cold month. Perhaps the Australians began celebrating Christmas in July because they were “dreaming of a white Christmas”.
