British Christmas Holiday Decor

Christmas holiday decor with an English appeal

Christmas holiday decor is influenced by many factors including cultural customs and religious practices. Sometimes Christmas holiday decor is selected just because it is beautiful and sometimes to complement the standard decorating theme in a home.

Laura Legend’s favorite Christmas holiday decor has British influence…

Because of Laura’s vast interest in history and culture, she absolutely loves antiques and Victorian-style furniture, rugs and such are among her favorite.

Victorian decor, and relatively Victorian Christmas holiday decor, originates from the Victorian era which is the period of time from 1837 to 1901 when Queen Victoria reigned in England. Thus, Victorian Christmas holiday decor has a touch of British custom and appeal.

Being an age of materialism, Victorian furniture is usually made of dark finished hardwood like mahogany or rosewood that is elaborately carved with leaf or floral designs. Marble tabletops are also common to Victorian style furnishings.

Thus, Christmas holiday decor with a Victorian theme is usually elaborate and materialistic consisting of various colors of a “royal” appeal. Floral patterns, tapestries and extravagant rugs along with gold or pearls in Christmas ornaments are not uncommon to Victorian Christmas holiday decor.

Did you know? Boxing Day is a holiday in England (it has nothing to do with the sport of boxing!) Traditionally, Boxing Day was a day reserved for giving boxes of things to the needy. It was also a day when workers who were servants to a family on Christmas were given the day after Christmas off to spend with their family.

In addition to the Christmas holiday decor, England has some wonderful holiday traditions. Making plum pudding for Christmas is one of those great traditions. Mince pies are another favorite in Britain. Making wassail, a hot drink with a tang of apple, is a long time British Christmas tradition but it is not as widely practiced as it once was. British pantomimes were also common at Christmas at one time.

Many modern day Christmas traditions have an English influence and Victorian Christmas holiday decor is one of them.
